How about books by Gary Shteyngart. Have you read Absurdistan? It's good and his first book (The Russian Debutante's Handbook) is even better. I highly recommend.
Right now, I'm hooked on mystery novels by Laura Lippman, particularly her Tess Monaghan series. Remember when we used to like female PI's? Here is one who won't make you mad!
Also, if you are into historical fiction, I read the Masters of Rome series by Colleen McCullough (of Thorn Birds fame) and it was so good that I was unable to watch HBO's Rome because of the show's historical inaccuracies. McCullough is a meticulous researcher and the books are just fantastic.
